Permalinks are the structure of your page URLs. The right choice makes links readable, memorable and better for SEO — and it takes ten seconds to set.
A URL like /how-to-back-up-wordpress is clearer to people and search engines than /?p=123. Clean, descriptive URLs are easier to share, look trustworthy, and give a small SEO benefit.
Under Settings → Permalinks, select the "Post name" option for most sites. It produces short, keyword-friendly URLs. Save changes to apply it and refresh your site’s rewrite rules.
If you change permalinks on an established site, existing links will break unless you add redirects from old URLs to new ones. On a new site, set the structure once at the start and leave it.
