How to Set Email Routing in cPanel

1 Nov 2025 · 4 min read · DelhiHosting Team

Email routing tells cPanel whether to deliver your domain’s mail locally on the server or hand it to an external provider. Getting it right prevents lost mail.

Local vs remote

Set routing to "local" when your mailboxes live on our server, and "remote" when an external service like Google Workspace handles your mail. The wrong setting causes mail to vanish or bounce.

Set it correctly

In Email Routing, choose Local or Remote (or let cPanel auto-detect). If you’ve pointed MX records to an outside provider, set remote so the server doesn’t try to deliver mail to itself.

Troubleshoot delivery

If mail to your domain disappears or bounces oddly, routing is a prime suspect — especially right after changing MX records. Align routing with where your MX records point and delivery falls into place.

Quick tips
  • Local = mailboxes on our server
  • Remote = external mail provider
  • Match routing to your MX records
  • Check it when mail goes missing
Key takeaway

Email routing must match where your MX records point — local for our mailboxes, remote for external providers — or mail goes astray.
