How to Back Up Your WordPress Site (and Why It Matters)

25 May 2026 Β· 5 min read Β· DelhiHosting Team

A backup is the difference between a five-minute fix and a lost business. Here’s what to back up, how often, and where to store copies.

Back up files and database

A complete WordPress backup needs both your files (themes, plugins, uploads) and your database (posts, settings, users). A backup plugin or your cPanel backup tools can capture both. One without the other won’t fully restore your site.

Choose a sensible schedule

Back up at least weekly, and always before updates or major changes. Busy or e-commerce sites should back up daily. Automate it so it happens without you remembering.

Keep copies off-server

Store at least one recent copy away from your hosting account β€” cloud storage or your computer. If the server itself has a problem, an on-server backup may not be enough. Test a restore occasionally so you know it works.

Quick tips
  • βœ“Capture files AND database
  • βœ“Weekly minimum; daily for shops
  • βœ“Keep an off-server copy
  • βœ“Test restoring occasionally
Key takeaway

Automate complete backups, keep a copy off-server, and verify restores β€” so any disaster is just a quick recovery.
