How to Stop Spam Comments in WordPress

9 Feb 2026 · 4 min read · DelhiHosting Team

If you do want comments, you’ll also get spam. A couple of layers of protection keep genuine discussion flowing while junk stays out of sight.

Enable a spam filter

An anti-spam plugin such as Akismet automatically catches the vast majority of spam before you ever see it. It’s the single most effective step and runs quietly in the background.

Require moderation

In Discussion settings, hold comments for approval — at least the first from each new commenter — so nothing appears publicly until you’ve checked it. Add a few blocklist words to auto-bin obvious junk.

Add a human check

A simple anti-bot challenge or a short delay deters automated spam bots, which generate most junk comments, without annoying real readers.

Quick tips
  • Turn on Akismet or similar
  • Hold new commenters for moderation
  • Use comment blocklist keywords
  • Add an anti-bot check
Key takeaway

Combine a spam filter, moderation and a bot check to keep genuine comments while junk never reaches your site.
