Inactive themes and plugins still need updating and can still be exploited. Removing what you don’t use makes your site lighter, safer and easier to maintain.
Even deactivated, plugins and themes contain code that can carry vulnerabilities, and they still require updates. Every one you keep is another thing to patch and another potential entry point.
Keep one default theme as a fallback for troubleshooting, plus your active theme (and its child). Delete the rest. For plugins, deactivate, confirm nothing breaks, then delete — don’t leave them dormant.
Each time you finish a one-off task, remove the plugin you used for it. A short, deliberate list of installed extensions is faster and far easier to keep secure.
Unused themes and plugins still pose risk — delete everything you don’t need, keeping only your active set and one fallback theme.
