How to Enable Lazy Loading for Images

11 Dec 2025 · 3 min read · DelhiHosting Team

Lazy loading defers images until a visitor scrolls near them, so pages feel instant even when they contain lots of media. It’s one of the easiest speed wins in WordPress.

How it helps

Instead of loading every image up front, lazy loading waits until each image is about to enter the screen. The top of the page renders immediately, and bandwidth isn’t wasted on images nobody scrolls to.

Turn it on

Modern WordPress lazy-loads images by default. A performance plugin can extend this to background images, iframes and videos, and fine-tune when loading begins for the smoothest experience.

Mind the first screen

Don’t lazy-load the main image visible when the page first opens, or it may flicker in late. Most plugins let you exclude that hero image so it appears instantly.

Quick tips
  • Lazy-load below-the-fold media
  • Extend it to iframes and videos
  • Exclude the hero/first image
  • Combine with image compression
Key takeaway

Lazy loading makes media-heavy pages feel instant — keep it on, extend it with a plugin, but exclude the first visible image.
